A polar bear is lost in a large and overbearing city.  He tries to ask for help but people are too caught up in the hustle and bustle of city life to hear him.  He is finally noticed by a little girl who takes him home, feeds him, bathes him and reads to him.  A story of friendship ensues as the little girl devotes herself to helping the polar bear find his way home.

There’s a humour present in the illustrations that enhance the story. The visual narrative is strong and there is good use of angular perspective and scale to convey the overwhelming, claustrophobic nature of the city. This contrasts well with the more expansive scenes in the Arctic. Panelling gives a sense of movement and progression to the story as the plot develops. There is an interesting use of available space for telling the story and a wonderfully expressive quality is employed to show the mood and emotion of characters. Use of colour is highly effective and builds atmosphere. There are numerous subplots told through the illustrations. Visual clues support the unfolding narrative in this story of belonging and friendship.

I did not like the unrealistic nature of this book but the polar bear was cool. The illustrations were clear, the brightness of certain words/elements stand out from the grey book.

Lost is an extraordinary story for younger readers about a bear who has become lost. The images are extremely detailed and will intrigue children. The colours are beautiful. The bear has a curious personality whilst on his journey.

I really liked this book. At the start the bear is lost but at the end finds his way home. This teaches you that you shouldn’t give up. I recommend this book for children aged 6 and up and I rate this book 5/5.
