Choose Love
A really fantastic collection of poems, with flowing stanzas. It is interesting to learn that the poems revolve around true accounts, and greatly adds to the joy of reading this.

The Boy Lost in the Maze
In my opinion, this book was undone by its prose and the individual poems which make it up. The poems were confusing and also the boundaries were blurred between the two characters. Apart from that, I enjoyed this book because of the themes of absent fathers and searching for themselves.

Joe

Away With Words
I loved the friendship between Gala and Natalie, but I found the style of writing pretty confusing. The thing I found the most confusing was when the writing was missing words, it was hard to make out what was actually going on. The ending was probably my favorite part because personally I feel like that made the most sense. I don't feel like it is the type of book I would usually go for though. But to be honest, overall it was a good book. I would rate this book a 5/10

Jasmin

Crossing the Line
This has to be one of the best books on the shortlist, whether it be the format, choice of words or just how the words flow throughout each page. This was a great book to read.

Tyler

The Song Walker
As an avid reader, I can say really enjoyed this book. In it, a girl is wandering around the Australian outback. She meets a First Country girl who is looking for her sister. They meet people along the way, and as the book goes along she gains her memories back. In particular, I like the cyclical nature of the book and the huge plot twist at the end.

Joe

Choose Love
I think that this book touches on a very serious subject in a way that makes it equally understandable and incredibly emotional. The poems were very well written and each was unique while all linking to the same subject. I would love to read more books like this.

Olivia

The Song Walker
I thought it was a very tense and thrilling story, it was quite exciting as I tried to picture what was happening, the book made me want to constantly want to read on and I would highly recommend it.

Arabella

Choose Love
I really loved the book Choose Love, because it really gave me a bigger picture on what is happens in different countries. I think my favorite poem would be Supermarket Flowers because it is telling you that sometimes you buy stuff that you don't know how other people worked to get that here.

Hanna

The Boy Lost in the Maze
I didn't really enjoy this book, it wasn't entertaining

JESSICA

Crossing the Line
I think this book was incredibly clever and the style is very unique, portraying the story in a very effective way. The character development was realistic and relatable and the plot was interesting. I like how it touched a subject that is either not spoken about or joked about, with the right mix of informality and seriousness. I would definitely recommend it.

Olivia

Away With Words
I thought it was swell however the writing style got quite tangled and confusing

JESSICA

The Song Walker
I loved this book I think it perfectly balanced adventure with comedy whilst also being incredibly meaningful. I found Tarni and Sienna's relationship really heartwarming and I think it was nice to see a book revolving around friendship and discovery. I loved all the hidden meanings that nodded to the the ending plot twist. I found that it was a really good read and I particularly enjoyed learning about the culture of The First Country.

Emily

Crossing the Line
I thought it was a really great book. The plot was very good. However didn't like the page font as it put me off the book a small bit. Other than that it was a great engaging book.

Steady for This
This book was written really well, but I didn't really enjoy it. I don't think it's really my genre.

Katie

Choose Love
This book was interesting because it pulled on my heartstrings, telling a real story through powerful poems.

Safiyyah's War
I really enjoyed reading this book. I found the plot very interesting and exciting. It sort of felt like I was going on an adventure. The main thing I liked about it was the fact that it was showing people that no matter what religion you are you can still help people and at the same time you can be the help. Throughout the book I felt mixed emotions which I feel is a good thing. I feel that the author used the correct techniques when they were needed.

Ivy

Away With Words
I really enjoyed reading this book. I think it was really interesting how in their world you can physically see the words coming out of people's mouths. I think it's really nice that if somebody told you a compliment you could keep it forever. Gala moving really resonated with me and the feelings she felt once she moved. I think a lot of people will really relate to Gala and Natalie. I felt sorry for Natalie and was angered by the injustice she faced. All the characters had a meaning behind them and were facing real life problems. I think this was a great book.

Emily

Steady for This
I think that the style of writing was childish compared to the target audience and that the characters were not relatable, as well as being not accurate for their ages. The language was too informal and the plot seemed immature. I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Olivia

The Song Walker
In my opinion, I found this book was more suitable for people that don't read that often, like me. This book was more dialogue focused then description which I liked. The plot was interesting because of the mystery of the main characters and how they survived by themselves. Overall I really enjoyed this book.

Meenma

The Door of No Return
I found this book a little confusing; it was as if the poems were all over the place and didn't make a lot of sense. Some parts of the book were a little gory, so I feel like the book should be rated 12+. I'm a bit conflicted about whether I liked the book or not, overall the plot was interesting but confusing. The style of the writing made it even more confusing! But I guess if that's what you enjoy reading, then its a good book.

Jasmin

Steady for This
In my opinion, I didn't really like the book because it wasn't really my style and I just didn't really feel like I connected with the main character but I would recommend this book for people that like rappers and people who aspire to be a rapper or a singer.

Hanna

Choose Love
I enjoyed this book but it was a bit short and slightly confusing. I enjoyed "why you bought that bunch of supermarket flowers, without knowing what the price was, or who paid it."-from supermarket flowers. Personally I feel like this quotation means that its easy to just go and get something without putting any thought about the troubles or the pain and suffering it took for it to get to you. I also love how this book raises refugee awareness.

Jasmin

Crossing the Line
It's a sad book, but also a beautiful one! It shows real life struggles and things people have to go through daily. Its descriptive and good with words; the things that happen in the book may hit home for some people, or make others sad. That's how good it is. Its powerful and thrilling, sad and beautiful. I would recommend. 10/10!

Meredith

Choose Love
I enjoyed this book as it raised awareness for refugees and how they suffer with having to flee their homes. I also enjoyed how it has an outstanding amount of beautiful poetry telling different stories.

Bella

Crossing the Line
I really enjoyed this book, specifically the portrayal of Erik and Ravi's friendship throughout. Ravi's continuous loyalty added a touch of hopefulness to the plot, especially towards the end. I enjoyed the structure massively, it definitely peaked my interest as this isn't something I usually see in the books I read and I thought the layout was incredibly clever. The characters were well written and easy to picture in every day life. The ending was surprising, although I enjoyed it and it flowed nicely with the story. Would definitely recommend.

Abi

Away With Words
I think that Away with words is an excellent book with a heart-warming storyline about finding your voice with the help of friends. I love the concept of the words you say falling out your mouth and the way the author spread words around some of the pages to show Gala's emotions. I also liked the use of the squiggly lines to show the difficulty in communication between the characters and how Gala learns and understands more English. The use of different fonts to show emotions could have been used more throughout the book to add on to the feeling of the book but apart from that it was a lovely book with a great storyline.

Tamsin

Safiyyah's War
I personally adore this book. The characters are so well written and I must admit it's refreshing to have a main character that's Muslim as most books I read never have a character like that let alone have them as the main character. Truly a welcome change. I find the book was written at a nice pace and the plot is gripping and kept me reading for hours. (who needs sleep when you can read?)

Melanie

The Boy Lost in the Maze
The structure of the book was really interesting and unique, something I personally haven't read before but I enjoyed it. I like how Theo explores his own way of writing, which creates an interesting mix of narrative poems, both free verse and using rhyming structures. The character development was interesting as well as the plot line, the intertwining two stories, one of which was very familiar to me but was told in a different light.

Olivia

Choose Love
I really liked how the writing of this book, considering that there are several poems, showing how these poems effect their reality and their upbringing.

Jess

The Song Walker
The Song Walker was a really fabulous book. It showed a beautiful friendship growing from two strangers. I really enjoyed reading this book and I love that it showed different aspects of the Australian outback. This book also focused on finding her sister. I think that it was very thrilling.

Bella

The Song Walker
I really enjoyed this book, but it isn't the type of book I would usually go for. It was very well written and had such good plot twists that you wouldn't expect. I love their friendship and the fact that one girl is looking for her sister and one is looking for herself.

Jasmin

Safiyyah's War
The sentiment and overall plot was enjoyable and the representation of other sides of this certain period of history was important. However, I thought the way the younger characters acted wasn't realistic as they acted slightly older, more emotionally mature, than I think they should be. Taking in account the circumstances they were in and the time period, I still think the younger characters were unrealistic and hard to connect to.

Olivia

Safiyyah's War
This book has a great story line, its interesting and unique! I've only read the first 10 pages but its already a beautiful book! 10/10!

Meredith

Crossing the Line
I really enjoyed the plot of this book. It is about a boy grieving for his father who gets caught up in county lines drug dealing. The layout of it frustrated me though because it feels like the author is just trying to make a smaller book bigger by making the lines smaller and some words vertical or translucent. Overall though I enjoyed the book but it is held back by the layout

joe

Crossing the Line
I really liked this book and I think that it was interesting because if Erik hadn't left the school with Ben and Travis then none of what happens would have taken place. I also like the structure of the poems and how they were laid out as it made it more interesting to read. My favorite structure of a poem was the poem that was shaped as a gun. I think it touched on some very important issues and I really enjoyed reading it.

Emily

The Boy Lost in the Maze
Never have I seen a book with such an interesting layout, that at times made it difficult to follow, but made the book feel like a story being told from person to person. I loved how the stories mingled the further I read.

Tyler

Away With Words
I like the detailed descriptions and the character development as well as the plot. The characters were realistic but I think the portrayal of school life was not as realistic, for example the punishment for the bully and the allowance of Gala and Natalie's performance. The description of emotion was interesting and I liked the subtle twist in reality.

Olivia

The Door of No Return
I think the book was very exciting, I particularly enjoyed the contrast from the first half of the book to the second and I thought the ending was perfect for the genre of the book. Only thing was the writing layout which threw me off a bit at the start but got used to it after a while. Overall I think the book portrayed the meaning very well and I would definitely recommend it to others. 8/10

Crossing the Line
I like the book but I felt like it jumped from side to the other when he got involved in stuff he shouldn't've .
